Changed Enviroments | Self Initiated Over the summer I spent my time travelling around parts of Europe. I visited the cities of Turkey, Greece and Italy over a four week period. I meet college friends, read books and engaged in contemplation. Whilst on the beach thinking about the strength of the sun, 1984 (the book I was reading) there was an accident. I had just got back from a swim in the sea when there was a big Turkish style commotion. Its not unusual but this seemed different, I could see though the crowd someone lying on the beach with lots of people gathered around.That’s when I realsied the the person was being given heart compression’s. The Ambulance arrived about 50 mins later... It was to late... A boy died infront of my eyes. He had been swimming in the part of the bay reserved for boats (big boats). Maybe he was hit? I could not speak the language to find out. One thing was for sure there is a big problem with people and boats sharing the same water. In the defence of the local beach wardens, they had placed a huge rope right across the bay some 200/300meters to divide the areas safe for swimming and unsafe. On this occassion it was not enough. I felt compelled to try to try to inform people of the correct place to swim... The beach was in a very isolated place some 15mins from the nearest cart track. materials would be hard to come by, even food was a struggle. I had to use what was around me. The pictures are of my installation which is my effort to help change my environment.  |
