MPC wakes up Primal Scream's – Some Velvet Morning.
(October 2003)

Dawn Shadforth of BlackDog Films has directed Primal Scream's latest video, "Some Velvet Morning" with post production at MPC.

The promo for the cover version of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Haselwood's song pays homage to the original music video. Bobby Gillespie and Kate Moss stand on separate stages silhouetted before abstract psychedelic imagery. The graphics were projected using a "Rad Light" Barco Projector and then the look was enhanced by using large mirrors to create a light and airy feel. The mood of the clip varies relating to the main protagonist on screen with dark imagery for Bobby (e.g. ravens, snakes and dragons) and lighter more feminine graphics, (such as flowers, petals and butterflies) surrounding Kate.

MPC's FX Studio artist Dan Duran's involvement started in the early stages of the creative process, developing background imagery for the projections alongside renowned fashion illustrator Julie Verhoeven and designers Kai and Sunny. Into this, he incorporated numerous animated CG elements including a flock of birds and a herd of wild horses. Dan also compiled shots composed of over 500 layers of abstract and bold photographic images and performed key frame changes to give the dreamy look required.

The promo was then onlined in Inferno by Dan Sanders, who took out the dissolves and replaced them with more optical fades and transitions in keeping with the projected image feel of the video.

Colour grading was carried out by MPC's Mark Gethin who enhanced the pastel colours to decrease colour contrast and create the striking yet soft and natural look - favoured by 1960's musicians - that Shadforth wanted.

The official release date for "Some Velvet Morning" is November 10th 2003.
